Advanced reading and writing skills. Study of syntax enables more sophisticated paragraph structure. Readings include newspaper texts on current affairs, business, science and technology.

Introductory course that surveys various fields in linguistics, including first/second language acquisition, phonetics/phonology, morphology/syntax, semantics/pragmatics, language variation, computational linguistics/natural language processing, and writing systems. Credit not allowed for both LING 2100 and LING 2001.

This course is designed to help students develop and deepen their knowledge and understanding of traditional and contemporary Korean society and culture through media analysis. Students will strengthen their critical thinking abilities as well as rhetorical proficiency by studying documentaries, films, dramas, commercials, TV variety shows, music, TV news programs, news articles, and open-access online research articles. Taught in English.

This course teaches students an intermediate level Korean intensively during the summer LBAT study-abroad period in an immersed environment in Korea.

Review and extension of basic grammar, intensive vocabulary- building, and development of idiom on the basis of conversation, reading, and writing activities (in Russia). Credit not allowed for both RUSS 2692 and RUSS 2002.

This course will examine South Korean history through cinema, and Korean cinema through history, by viewing films from various time periods that depict moments in Korean history. The films will range from colonial-era works from the 1940s to contemporary Korean films of the 2010s, and each module will be accompanied by historical background readings. Throughout this course, we will watch films about a certain time period from that time period, and also watch films about that same period that were produced long after; we will examine films that offer sharply differing portrayals and perspectives on the same time period. The objective is not to learn historical facts through films, but rather to understand how films depict history, how the socio-political climate of the film’s own time period shapes its depiction of history, and how we can view film texts themselves as a different kind of historical argument.

This course does not assume prior knowledge of Korean culture or of film studies, but rather seeks to provide students with a basic understanding of modern Korean history, as well as understanding how media itself is part of Korea’s tumultuous past.

Introduction to listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French and to the culture of French-speaking regions.

Selected journalistic and literary writings used as a springboard for discussion of social, economic, and political issues of contemporary Latin America. Conducted in Spanish.
