Course Description & Goal
Welcome to Korean 1001. This elementary course is targeting at beginners with no prior knowledge of Korean. Starting with the Korean alphabet, this course will help students build basic skills of Korean in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Some multimedia materials will be used to enhance students’ understanding of the Korean culture. Course materials will be available online and will cover basic grammar and structures of Korean and topics such as identities, locations, time, purpose/intention, desire, suggestions.
Course Goals and Learning Outcomes
On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Recognize the basic grammatical terms of Korean such as markers and endings.
- Identify the fundamentals of Korean grammar, syllable structure rules and basic syntax.
- Read out loud simple texts comfortably.
- Engage in basic daily conversations, in the context of introducing oneself, talking about campus life, asking someone else’s opinions, suggesting something to others, and responding to suggestions, etc.
Course Material
All course materials will be available online 100%. Students will be given access to all class materials. Course texts including workbook and drill classes will be posted online and students can access any time. Students are expected to complete their homework in time. Homework can be hand-written but submitted electronically on Canvas.

Description of Graded Components
(1) Attendance (Required)
Students should attend all class meetings. Three unexcused absences will not be penalized. However, from the fourth additional absence, 1 point will be deducted per absence. Approved (excused) absences with official documents (doctor's note or STAMP document, or equivalent) will not be penalized.
(2) Homework (26%):
* Late work policy: Any assignment or test submitted after the due date will be penalized by deducting 20% of the original score. No late work 3 days after the due dates will be accepted if it was not excused with official or equivalent documents.
Workbook HW (12%): Students are expected to do the assigned homework workbook material. Due dates will be posted on Canvas as well. -0.02% will be deducted per mistake/wrong answer.
Reading HW (6%): Students must record their reading (of given texts) and upload it on Canvas.
Drill HW (6%): Students are expected to do 1 drill homework assignment per each conversation. There will be 12 drill assignments (Each drill HW counts 0.5 point). Go to the Activities page of each conversation and hand-write all the grammar points and sentences given on the page, take a picture of your hand-written drill homework or scan it, and submit it on Canvas. (Don’t copy the electronic texts and paste them. To prevent this, I want you to hand-write the sentences and digitize later by scanning or taking a picture)
2 Short Essays (2%): Topics will be given (or students are free to choose their own). Each essay will have at least 10 sentences.
(3) Presentations (7%): At the end of the semester, students will form a team of 4 or 5 people and present in a group on any topic related to the Korean language or culture in any format (video clips, Powerpoint files, etc.)
(4) Vocabulary Quiz (12%): Vocab & Dictation quizzes will be given when a new conversation of each unit starts (at the beginning of the class). The vocabulary quiz days will be announced on Canvas and students should study for the quiz before they come to class.
(5) Unit Test (30%): After each unit is finished, a unit test (6 points each) will be given.
(6) Midterm (10%)
There will be a formal written midterm exam about the materials covered in class. It may include a listening test. (100% Written)
(7) Final (15%)
The final is almost the same as the Midterm exam. It will include a speaking test. (Written 80%, Speaking 20%)
(8) Grading Scale
Students’ final letter grade will be assigned according to the following scale:
A 90-100%
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 60-69%
F 0-59%
