Course Description & Goal
Welcome to Korean 1002. This course is a continuation of the previous beginners’ course, KOR 1001. Based upon the basic skills students acquired from KOR 1001, this course will help students develop and solidify more must-know fundamentals of Korean in all four skill areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Course materials will be available online and will cover more complex structures such as coordinate and subordinate sentences, noun modifiers, verbs showing irregular conjugation patterns, etc.
Course Goals and Learning Outcomes
On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Recognize the basic connective adverbs of 그리고(and), 하지만(but), 그런데(but surprisingly), and 그래서(so).
- Combine two separate sentences into one by using proper connective endings of 고,지만, 은데/ㄴ데/는데, 아서/어서/해서 with accurate tense markers.
- Understand and use the subordinative connective adverbs of time and condition (~을 때 (when~), ~면/으면(if~)).
- Understand the noun modifiers and use proper words and forms to describe objects or events.
- Recognize the following irregular verb types and conjugate them properly: ㄷ irregular, ㄹ irregular, ㅂ irregular, 으 irregular, and 르 irregular.
- Engage in basic conversations about plans, time and conditions, describing objects and ordering foods, suggestions, and guessing with enhanced linguistic knowledge.
Course Material
All course materials will be available online 100%. Students will be given access to all class materials. Course texts including workbook and drill class materials are all posted online, and students can access them any time. Students are expected to complete their homework in time and turn in all of their (hand-written) homework materials (or pictures/images, voice files, etc.) electronically on Canvas.

Description of Graded Components
(1) Attendance (Required)
Students should attend all classes. Approved (excused) absences with official documents will not be penalized up to 3 times. From the FOURTH absence, 1 point will be deducted per absence from the total score.
(2) Homework (32%)
Workbook HW (12%): Students are expected to do the assigned homework workbook material. Due dates will be posted on Canvas as well.
Drill HW (12%): Students are expected to do Drill Assignments in time, where they will practice substituting critical phrases from each conversation. Due dates will be posted on Canvas as well. -0.05% will be deducted per mistake/wrong answer.
Reading HW (6%): Students must record their reading (of given texts) and upload it on Canvas.
2 Short Essays (2%): Topics will be given (or students are free to choose their own). Each essay will have at least 20 sentences.
Late work/tests: 20% penalty will be taken off from any late work/tests submitted within 3 days after the due date. No late work will be accepted after the 3 days unless students have been excused or submit official documents of proof for their situation.
(3) Presentations (7%): At the end of the semester, students will form a team of 4 or 5 people and present in a group on any topic related to the Korean language or culture in any format (video clips, Powerpoint files, etc.)
(4) Vocabulary Quiz (12%): Vocab & Dictation quizzes will be given when a new conversation of each unit starts. The vocabulary quiz days will be announced on Canvas and students should study for the quiz before they come to class.
(5) Unit Test (24%): After each unit is finished, a unit test will be given.
(6) Midterm (10%)
There will be a formal written midterm exam about the materials covered in class. It may include a listening test. (Written 100%)
(7) Final (15%)
The final is almost the same as the Midterm exam. It will include a speaking test. (Written 80%, Speaking 20%)
For any quiz or test missed without any excused reasons or approval, no make-up will be allowed.
(8) Grading Scale
Students’ final letter grade will be assigned according to the following scale:
A 90-100%
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 60-69%
F 0-59%
