Course description:

This asynchronous online course, taught entirely in English, explores the evolution of Korean society from the 1860s to the 1979 through Korean films, music, and drama soundtracks. Students will analyze key historical and socio-cultural developments, gaining a nuanced understanding of modern Korea. By the course’s end, students will be equipped to articulate and analyze aspects of Korean society using critical perspectives drawn from course materials.

Course learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of modern Korean history (1860s–1979) through films and music.

  • Develop advanced analytical skills to interpret cultural and historical narratives.

  • Understand key terms, dates, and figures that shaped Korea’s past and present.

  • Analyze Korean society from diverse cultural perspectives using competing theories.
