Catalog Description

A foundational course introducing students to the core principles and practical skills of scenic design, scenic construction, and scenic painting. Combining online conceptual lectures with hands-on technical application, students build physical production elements directly within the DramaTech Black Box Theatre. Through practical shop work, collaborative production activities, and critical evaluation of scenic elements in live DramaTech performances, students learn to translate design criteria into functional stage environments.

Assessment is based on online module completion, discussion assignments, laboratory hour participation, and structured self-reflection under a mastery-focused, alternative grading model. Lab hours offer flexible completion options, including Saturday sessions and weekday evening work calls. Safety orientation is provided; closed-toe shoes and proper shop attire are required for all laboratory sessions.
